An introduction to investment portfolios with principles
What is ethical investment?
Ethical investment is about supporting progress: promoting businesses that are helping to drive positive change in the world – be it environmental, financial or social. It’s also about transparency: diverting capital away from businesses that are harming the planet or contributing to social inequality.
Ethical investment is also about you: providing the opportunity to align your money and your investment portfolio with your principles and contributing to a cleaner, greener and more equitable world – without losing the opportunity to generate financial returns. As always, the value of your investments is not guaranteed and can fall as well as rise, so you may get back less than you originally invested.
Recycle your plastic, invest in the arms trade
Climate change. Food poverty. Social injustice. As a society we are more alert to the challenges facing the global population than ever before. That’s why you recycle your plastic. You insulate your home. Maybe you have even purchased an electric car. And that’s great. But – without even knowing – you may have money invested in the arms trade. Or palm oil producers. Or fossil fuel manufacturers and deforestation agents.
Social responsibility has never been higher on the agenda. But many people with investment accounts and pension funds are blind to the companies in which they have invested. Unfortunately, investment in companies failing to meet ethical standards is commonplace among fund managers.
Why choose P1 Investment Management?
Lots of businesses talk up their environmental or sustainability ethos. Dig below the marketing speak and it can be hard to find any ethical credentials of substance. We know all too well.
Because our team of research and analysis experts – the head of which has formal qualifications in sustainable and ethical investment – conducts meticulous due diligence on every fund manager we work with. And we don’t put a fund on our panel until we have interviewed them and are happy with their answers. We have also voluntarily appointed an external ethical oversight committee to guide our investment policies, making us one of the only investment managers in the UK to have done so. In a nutshell: you can be sure that ethical investments with P1 really are ethical investments. That’s a promise.
