ISO 14001: is part of 14000 family of standards related to environmental management, providing practical tools for companies looking to manage their environments responsibly. 14001 defines a criteria and focuses on the application of an Environmental Management System (EMS) to support achieve this. The standard is international recognised with over 300,000 certifications in 170 countries. As a management system, it does not state the requirements for environmental performance, but maps out a framework for a company to follow. The company sets their own targets and performance measures, and the standard highlights what an organization needs to do to meet these goals, and to monitor and measure the situation.  It is used by an organisation wanting to improve resource efficiency, reduce waste and additionally reduce costs. Key areas it covers are:

(a) minimize how our operations negatively affect the environment,

(b) comply with applicable laws, regulations, and other environmentally oriented requirements,

(c) continually improve on the above.

ISO 14001 can also be integrated with other management functions and assists companies in meeting their environmental and economic goals. It is based on the well known Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle of management.
