What are Defaqto Ratings?
Defaqto is a financial research organisation that provides analysis of financial products for advisers and investors. Its Star and Diamond Ratings are used to compare products based on features and service characteristics against defined criteria such as accessibility to advisers, quality of the portfolio and service levels.
Ratings are awarded on a scale from 1 to 5 stars, intended to provide an at-a-glance indication of how a product compares with others in the same category. Products receiving a 4- or 5-Star rating meet Defaqto’s published “core criteria”, which outline the minimum features and standards required for higher-rated products.
Defaqto rates Managed Portfolio Services (MPS) in slightly different segments to reflect where and how the portfolios are delivered and grouped. “MPS Direct” refers to discretionary MPS portfolios held directly with the discretionary fund manager (custody with the manager itself), whereas “MPS on Platform” refers to those same kinds of portfolios delivered via third-party investment platforms accessible to advisers and clients on those platforms. Defaqto also publishes Family level ratings (e.g., MPS (Direct) Family and MPS (Platform) Family), which assess the entire range of MPS portfolios offered by a manager in that category (direct or platform) as a group rather than evaluating a single individual portfolio. These family ratings help compare broader ranges of risk-rated portfolios on performance, risk, cost and other metrics across the market.
